Magic Baits Guide to Sterkfontein Dam

Sterkfontein Dam, near Harrismith in the Free State, stands proudly as South Africa’s highest earth-fill dam and a vital part of the Tugela-Vaal Water Project. With its massive storage capacity and unique design—being the country’s only large dam without a spillway—it plays a key role in supplying water to the Vaal system. Nestled inside the Sterkfontein Dam Nature Reserve, the area draws thousands of outdoor enthusiasts for its sailing winds, open waters, scenic hikes, and abundant wildlife.

For anglers, Sterkfontein is best known for its strong yellowfish population, attracting dedicated fly-fishermen year-round. But it’s also a rewarding venue for bank anglers targeting carp and catfish, with the right bait combinations producing consistent action. A truly magical spot where nature, adventure, and great fishing come together.

A Deep-Dive Into Feed, Flavour Selection & Proven Methods for Consistently Catching Fish at Sterkfontein Dam

At Magic Baits, we do far more than develop and sell products—we live the sport. Our passion is helping every angler improve, understand their waters, and catch more fish. With this in mind, we conducted an in-depth study of Sterkfontein Dam to uncover what truly works in its unique clear-water environment.

Across all our testing and catch reports, one standout pattern appeared consistently: the use of CS Liquid Carp Food Feed Booster and Cypri Liquid Carp Food Feed Booster in feeding and baiting-up strategies.

These two boosters were present in almost every successful session, and in most cases, anglers used them together, creating a powerful feeding signal that travels further in Sterkfontein’s pristine, open water.

Ground Feed Selection

When analysing catch reports from Sterkfontein Dam, one trend stands out clearly. Although some anglers have had success using Heavyweight Feed, the data shows that Popcorn Feed is by far the preferred and most consistent performer at this venue.

Its lighter composition, faster breakdown, and ability to release flavour quickly in Sterkfontein’s clear water make it a reliable choice for drawing fish into the area and keeping them feeding with confidence.

It’s also worth noting that several successful sessions were recorded using a 50/50 blend—half Heavyweight Feed and half Popcorn Feed. This combination offers the best of both worlds: the binding strength and weight of Heavyweight Feed, balanced with the fast attraction and visibility of Popcorn Feed.

Bait Conclusion

From the hookbait and flavour analysis above, a clear pattern emerges: at a crystal-clear water venue like Sterkfontein Dam, specific colours consistently outperform the rest. The most successful hookbaits were dominated by white, yellow, and pink, all of which stand out naturally underwater without appearing too aggressive or unnatural.

How to approach a venue that has clear water

This aligns perfectly with our earlier article on fishing clear-water venues, where we discussed the importance of using natural-looking colours and flavours. Subtle, softer tones create a more realistic presentation, while overly bold colours—such as bright reds or strong fluorescein—can easily spook fish in clear, high-visibility conditions.

Proven Method

A highly effective method repeatedly mentioned by successful anglers at Sterkfontein Dam is the Sliding Rietvlei trace, with one important modification. While most anglers bind both hook links at the standard 10–12 cm, those who achieved consistent results made a small but powerful adjustment: they extended the top hook link to 20 cm.

This longer top hook allows the bait to stand proud above any grassy or uneven bottom—something commonly encountered at Sterkfontein. Anglers paired a Soft or Small Bleeding Floatie with a Hard Floatie on the same hook to ensure maximum buoyancy and a stable, upright presentation.

By lifting the top hook above the grass and creating a balanced floating profile, the bait becomes more visible and easier for feeding fish to locate, resulting in more confident pickups and noticeably better catch rates.
