“The Man Behind the Magic – Remembering My Father, Dudley Cato”

A Tribute to My Father — Dudley Cato

Michael Cato

Living his dream

My father, Dudley Cato, was more than a parent — he was my greatest teacher, my quietest supporter, and the reason I fell in love with carp fishing.

From the time I was just three years old, he took me to the water’s edge. Rods in hand, we’d sit for hours — not just catching fish, but building memories that would last a lifetime.

He taught me patience, respect for nature, and the art of truly understanding fish.

But most of all, he taught me about bait — how to mix it, balance it, preserve it, and, above all, believe in it.

From flavouring to fermentation, from doughs to mealies, he showed me that bait-making is more than a recipe — it’s a craft, a language of dedication and curiosity.

When I started making baits in my twenties, I could see in his eyes that I was living his dream. The pride he carried for what we were building together still gives me strength today.

He was a poet and a gentleman, a man who could turn words into art and silence into wisdom. While I may not write poems the way he did, I create in my own way — through the scents, textures, and flavours that catch fish and bring joy to anglers.

Every bottle, every mix, every product that leaves the Magic Baits workshop carries a piece of him. His fingerprints are in every flavour. His heart is in every catch.

Though he’s no longer by my side, his legacy lives on — in the waters we loved, in the anglers who use our baits, and in the Magic that connects every one of us who share the same passion.

He dreamed it.

I live it.

And through every cast, every catch, and every creation…

A Look Back at the Magic… 🎣✨

Every journey has a beginning — and today, I want to share one of ours.

This short video captures a simple but deeply meaningful moment with my late father, Dudley “The Poet” Cato, as he mixes a classic DCX dough using only DCX Muti and Instant Dough. It’s old-school, uncomplicated, and exactly the way he taught us.

The clip is in Afrikaans, but the message behind it needs no translation. These are the moments that shaped our passion… the kind of memories that remind us where Magic Baits truly began, how far we’ve come, and the legacy that continues to guide everything we create.

Thank you, Pa.

Your hands shaped the tradition we proudly carry forward.

A Special Moment at Wilgedraai 🎣❤️

I’m sharing a short extract from our time at Wilgedraai — a moment that has become incredibly precious to me. In the clip, my dad, Dudley “The Poet” Cato, is laughing and telling me I’m cheating while I’m holding a beautiful big grass carp.

It’s simple, light-hearted banter… but it captures everything I miss about him: his humour, his presence, and the way he made every session feel unforgettable.

These memories are treasures now — gentle reminders of where our journey started and the legacy that continues to guide Magic Baits.

ROOK DAAI VISSE!

Kyk hoe kom hulle in die miswolk aan!
Die vistermanne moet bontstaan . . .

Een vir een uitgeryg op my lyn;
Daar’s nie eens tyd vir bietjie wyn . . . .

Geen tyd om ‘n draai te loop,
Soos die reel run lyn af stroop . . . .

Op-aas, ingooi, vaskap, skep!
Kom aan boetie watch your step . . . .

Kyk dit lyk of hul in die ry staan!
Visse agter die MaGic aan . . . .

Alles danksy die Towenaar,
se MaGic aas . . . sowaar!

Give a man a fish!

Give a man a
fish and you will feed him for a day,

teach
a man to fish and he will feed himself for
ever

BUT . . . .

Teach your woman to fish and she will clean and cook it for you 🙂
