The Cyprinus Story

Why Dudley created it:

Cyprinus was inspired by Dudley’s many sessions on small farm dams and town ponds — the intimate venues he loved most. On difficult days, he often used Granadilla cold drink as a flavour, and it regularly turned a blank into a successful outing.

Seeing how consistently it worked, Dudley set out to create a true Granadilla fishing flavour that was stronger, cleaner, and more reliable than the cold drink version. After testing his mix side-by-side, Cyprinus proved itself quickly — delivering faster bites and better results every time.

A simple trick refined into a powerful, dedicated flavour.

What made it special:

Cyprinus was far more than a simple Granadilla flavour — it had depth, balance, and a gentle warmth that set it apart. Dudley built it on a soft, creamy base supported by protein powders and natural sweetness enhancers, giving the flavour a smooth body that released steadily in the water. The Granadilla provided the bright, fruity trigger he relied on, while subtle supporting notes added roundness and stability without overpowering the core profile.

Thanks to this blend of warmth, creaminess, and fruit acidity, Cyprinus dispersed beautifully in both still and flowing water. The red tint created an attractive underwater plume that caught attention quickly, especially in smaller venues where fish respond to visual and scent changes.

What truly made it special was its versatility: strong enough to wake up a quiet session, yet gentle enough to keep fish confident and feeding. A refined evolution of the Granadilla trick — smoother, richer, and far more effective.

Memories or specific sessions:

I, Michael — Dudley’s son — remember clearly how effective Cyprinus was from the very beginning. When we first started fishing a new little dam in Alberton, now known as Jackson Dam, our early sessions were tough. We blanked more than once, and nothing seemed to work.

That changed the day my dad prepared a batch of bait flavoured with Cyprinus — mealies, boilies and doughs. From that moment on, everything shifted. The bites came quicker, the fish responded better, and suddenly we were outfishing everyone around us.

Cyprinus became the flavour that turned a difficult venue into one of our favourite success stories.

What type of waters it dominated in:

Cyprinus quickly proved itself as a standout performer in small to medium-sized dams and ponds — the exact type of waters Dudley loved to fish. Its bright Granadilla profile carried exceptionally well in these more intimate venues, where fish respond fast to sharp, fruity signals.

It worked consistently in farm dams, municipal ponds, estate waters, and suburban dams like Jackson Dam, delivering reliable bites even on quiet days. The flavour’s warm, creamy body also made it effective in slightly stained water, helping it hold its presence longer.

Whether the water was pressured, slow, or newly explored, Cyprinus had a way of waking up smaller venues and turning them into productive sessions.

What made anglers love it:

Those who had the rare opportunity to fish with the original Cyprinus quickly realised how special it was. Many of the fellow anglers who fished with us at Jackson Dam saw their own blank sessions turn around after trying it — and the success didn’t stop there.

They later shared stories of Cyprinus producing excellent results at Vaaldam, Vaalriver, Roodeplaat, and Roodekoppies, proving that it wasn’t just a small-dam flavour. Anglers loved how confidently it triggered bites, how quickly fish responded to it, and how consistent it remained across different venues.

Cyprinus earned its reputation by helping ordinary anglers experience extraordinary sessions.

When to Use It:

✔ Best Water Type

Cyprinus performs exceptionally well in small to medium dams and ponds, farm dams, estate waters, and suburban venues where fish respond quickly to sharp, fruity notes.

✔ Water Clarity

Works best in slightly stained to moderately clear water.
The bright Granadilla scent travels far, while the red tint helps visibility in coloured water.

✔ Season

Highly effective in spring and summer, when fruit-style triggers shine.

Still reliable in early autumn on warm afternoons.

✔ Time of Day

Ideal during mid-morning to late afternoon, especially when the sun warms up the shallows and fish move higher in the water column.

✔ Depth

Most effective in 1–6 metres.

Cyprinus spreads beautifully in shallower dams and retains presence at mid-depths in slightly larger waters.

✔ When Fish Go Off the Bite

A perfect “wake-up flavour” when fish become passive.

The bright Granadilla lift helps trigger reaction bites on slow days.

They add lift, brightness, and quick-release attraction

They perform extremely well in small to medium dams, where Cyprinus shines

They match Dudley’s flavour logic: fruit attracts fish fast

Step-by-Step: How to Use the Boldip:

Simple instructions:

1️⃣ Shake the bottle well

Make sure all the Granadilla, warm, creamy and fluorescein elements are fully mixed for maximum attraction.

2️⃣ Apply a thick stripe on the mealiebomb

Run a generous line of Cyprinus over the top or sides of your bomb to create a strong fruity scent and red-tinted plume in the water.

3️⃣ Or dip your hookbaits directly into the Boldip

Give your floaties a quick dip so they’re coated — this gives an immediate flavour release as soon as the rig lands.

4️⃣ Option: Make a Cyprinus Flavoured Mealie with a few drops

Add 5 to 6 drops to plain mealies bottle and mix through. Ideal for bigger carp, especially at the Vaaldam and Vaalriver.

5️⃣ Cast and let it work

Cyprinus’ bright Granadilla profile, warm creamy notes and visible red cloud draw fish from around the area. Cast accurately, tighten up… and let the flavour do its job.

Why Cyprinus is unique:

Cyprinus stands out because it takes the sharp, lively character of Granadilla and builds it into a fuller, more balanced attraction profile. Instead of being a simple fruit flavour, it carries a warm, creamy depth that softens the sharpness and helps the scent travel further and hold longer in the water. The red tint adds a visible plume that increases curiosity and draws fish closer. This combination of bright fruit energy with gentle supporting notes makes Cyprinus effective in both small dams and larger venues, especially when you need a flavour that wakes up a quiet session and keeps fish feeding confidently.

Why carp respond well to this profile:

Carp respond strongly to Cyprinus because the sharp, uplifting nature of Granadilla is easy for them to detect and recognise, especially in smaller dams where scent travels quickly. The warm, creamy depth behind the flavour gives it a natural softness that encourages fish to stay in the area and feed with confidence. This balance of bright attraction and gentle background notes triggers both curiosity and feeding response, making Cyprinus highly effective on active and hesitant fish alike.

Chemistry of scents:

Cyprinus works because its scent releases in clear, layered stages: the sharp lift of Granadilla spreads quickly through the water, while the warm, creamy undertones cling to the bomb and disperse more slowly. Carp detect these changing signals through their highly sensitive chemoreceptors, making the flavour trail both noticeable and inviting. This layered release is what keeps fish moving toward the hook and staying in the feeding zone.

Dudley’s philosophy behind simple but effective blends:

Dudley believed that the most reliable flavours were the ones built on simple, natural triggers that fish could recognise instantly. His approach was always to take one strong primary note — like Granadilla — and support it with just enough warmth and softness to keep fish feeding confidently. No complications, no clutter, just clean, effective blends that worked on any water. Cyprinus is a perfect example of that philosophy.

Modern water behaviour vs old-school recipes:

Even as modern waters have become more pressured and fish more cautious, old-school recipes like Cyprinus continue to excel. Its simple, strong Granadilla trigger cuts through changing conditions and still speaks directly to a carp’s natural feeding instincts. While many modern blends rely on complex layers, Cyprinus proves that a clean, confident, well-balanced flavour from Dudley’s era remains just as effective — often more so — because fish behaviour hasn’t changed, only the environment around them has.
