Description:
Donaldson Dam, located in Westonaria, is one of the original premier carp fishing venues in the country. The dam is comprised of two sections: the top lake and the bottom lake, with the bottom lake being the favored spot for visiting anglers. For bookings, please reach out to the resort directly at the following numbers: Pinky: 060 362 0746, Simon: 078 779 0524.
Information about the venue: The dam features 23 fishing pegs. Pegs 1 to 5 are positioned along the dam wall side, with the runout area found in swim 1. The stretch known as the ‘bay’ contains pegs 6 to 13, where anglers can fish closely together. To the left of the bay are pegs 14 to 23, with peg 23 located at the furthest point of the dam. Facilities include ablutions behind peg 6 and the remains of an old lapa near peg 10. Note that fishing distance is limited on pegs in the bay (6-13), and boat access to the opposite shores is not permitted there, while fishing from all other pegs allows for boating across.
Fishing Tips: When selecting your fishing spots, focus on the opposite margins, especially near the reeds, as these areas often yield good results. Don’t overlook the reeds or trees directly in front of your peg; such features can be beneficial as well. For most pegs, particularly those numbered 14 and higher, you can target the gravel bar, typically located around 80 meters away. Fishing in the vicinity of the gravel bar—whether in front, on top, or behind it—can serve as a productive starting point.
In certain pegs, you may encounter areas with fairly deep silt. These silty regions can be great for landing larger fish, provided your rig presents effectively. Using popups or critically balanced wafters on a helicopter rig can enhance your chances of success in these conditions.
