The Black Beauty of the Vaal

The Black Beauty of the Vaal

Fanie Oosthuizen

The Vaal River just outside Parys has always been one of my favourite fishing destinations. There’s something magical about the slow, steady flow of that river — it’s unpredictable, full of surprises, and every time the reel starts to run slowly and the line tightens, your heart skips a beat. You never quite know what’s waiting on the other end.

On this particular morning, I was in for something truly special. The conditions were perfect — calm water, a soft breeze, and that earthy smell that only the Vaal can offer. I had my ground feed mixed and ready: Magic Baits Popcorn Fine Feed blended with Heavyweight Feed, and enriched with a generous dose of Cypri Liquid Carp Food Feed Booster.

The aroma alone felt irresistible. For bait, I chose a trimmed Skunk maize pip paired with a large Skunk bleeding floatie, boosted with Skunk Spray and a light dash of Traction Spray on the feed ball.

Not long after my lines were in, my reel began to tick slowly, then faster — that sweet sound that every angler knows. As I lifted the rod, I could feel the heavy, steady pull of a strong fish. The fight was solid and deep; this carp didn’t want to show itself easily. When it finally broke the surface, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing — a jet-black carp, gleaming like polished obsidian in the morning light.

The Black Beauty of the Vaal

It’s rare to see a carp this dark in colour. The Vaal River’s darker, silt-rich waters are home to unique conditions that can cause such pigmentation. Carp that live in deeper or murkier sections often develop darker scales due to melanin build-up, a natural adaptation for camouflage. Combined with the mineral content of the water and the low sunlight penetration, these fish can almost take on an ink-black appearance over time. It’s a true reflection of the environment they thrive in — wild, natural, and untamed.

The Black Beauty of the Vaal

He wasn’t the biggest carp I’ve ever caught, but holding that magnificent black fish felt like something extraordinary — a symbol of how nature always finds a way to surprise us. It reminded me that in the Vaal River, every catch tells its own story, and this one — the Black Beauty — will be a memory I’ll never forget.
