The long-awaited weekend had finally arrived — 11 October 2025 — and the conditions couldn’t have been better. Clear skies, calm water, and that unmistakable sense of excitement that only a fishing weekend brings.

My buddies and I had been planning this friendly overnight challenge for weeks, eager to test our skills on the Wilgerivier in Harrismith. The goal: target both carp and catfish, enjoy good company, and, of course, put our favourite Magic Baits to the test.

Setting Up

When we arrived at the river, I took a few minutes to read the water, watching for movement and signs of feeding fish. The plan was simple — the first rod would go out at 85 m, and the second at around 50 m. With the strategy locked in, it was time to mix up the feed and choose the winning bait combinations.

The Action

It didn’t take long for the first run. The long rod bent beautifully, and after a spirited fight, a stunning 4 kg mirror carp slipped into the net — the first catch of the session! From that moment, the energy around our swim was electric. The bites came steadily, and by the end of the session, we had an impressive bag weight of 29.4 kg.
