Can You Still Fish When Carp Are Spawning?
Michael Cato
Spawning season often leaves anglers with mixed feelings. Carp gather in the shallows, behavior changes dramatically, and many assume fishing is pointless. The truth is: you can still catch carp during spawning—and often some of your best fish.

> “Fishing during spawning isn’t a waste—it’s a chance to target active, aggressive carp when others pack up early.”

Not All Carp Spawn at the Same Time
One of the biggest misconceptions is that spawning happens all at once. In reality, carp spawn in stages. While some are actively reproducing, others have finished and are feeding, or haven’t started yet. This overlap creates opportunities for anglers who know how to adjust.
Where to Focus
Protective males often patrol shallow margins, aggressively defending eggs. These fish are active and highly responsive to a well-placed bait.
Bonus: During spawning, you may land females still full of eggs. These fish carry extra weight, adding to your catch total and sometimes tipping the scales higher than expected.

Time and Conditions
Carp often spawn during warm, calm mornings, but feeding activity continues later in the day or after weather shifts (cooler evenings or post-rain). Targeting these periods increases your chances of success.
Spotting Spawning vs Feeding
Spawning: Lots of splashing in shallow areas, chasing, and rolling.
Feeding: Bubbles, mud clouds, or fish rolling further out in the water column.
What to Change—and What Not To
Many anglers think spawning requires a complete bait rethink, but that’s not true. Your everyday baits still work—what matters most is distance, placement, and presentation.

Flavours That Shine During Spawning
Certain flavours stand out during this period, helping you adapt without overhauling your setup:
Pink Sweets – Musk-based with refreshing peppermint and spearmint. Cuts through water disturbance and stays attractive even when carp are preoccupied.
Zellie – Strong imported musk with sodium fluorescein, highly visible and irresistible. Ideal when carp are distracted during spawning.
Vampire Candy – Garlic-and-musk blend that triggers aggressive feeding responses. Perfect for protective males in shallow water.
VRM – Strawberry-and-musk blend balancing fruity sweetness with deep musk attraction, ideal for carp ready to feed again.

Hookbait & Presentation
Using balanced hookbaits, floating options, or PVA-packed bait ensures your flavour reaches the fish effectively. Focus on areas where carp are active or aggressive, and always place your bait strategically.
The Golden Rule
> “Not all carp spawn at the same time.”
Remember this, and spawning season transforms from a frustration into a prime opportunity.
Final Word
By adjusting distance, reading the water, timing your session, and using proven flavours like Pink Sweets, Zellie, Vampire Candy, and VRM, you can turn spawning season into one of your most rewarding times. And don’t forget—those egg-filled females can add extra weight to your haul, making the catch even sweeter.
Pro Tip: Handle spawning fish carefully—use unhooking mats and release quickly to protect both the fish and their eggs.
Spawning Success with Magic Baits
Fanie Oosthuizen
Since the fish were already spawning over the weekend and I didn’t just want to post photos of my fishing, I had to open an extra compartment in my tackle box. Luckily, I was able to find something that the fish would like. On a scorching hot day of 37°C in the shade, I decided to rig my short rod with double Vampire Floaties underneath and a single Vampire Floatie on the top hook, with a long fine hooklink behind, and the whole bait ball smeared with MZ Muti. The sweetcorn scent works really well in hot conditions.
At my other spot, a little further away, I rigged both the top and bottom with Spookasem Floaties, again with a long fine hooklink behind. On the bait ball, I used Zellie Muti with a touch of Carma Boldip. The fish were biting well, and it wasn’t long before we were completely worn out. Spawn time is great fishing time with Magic Baits.
